Community Helpers -Post Office
for Kindergarten

This is a great social studies unit with cross curriculum activities. The culminating project is based on the book, "Mailing May".
(Objective / standards)
Critical Thinking and Analytical Skills: standard 366.01.b
Objective: The students will be able to speak in terms of time such as now, then, before, after, today, yesterday, and tomorrow.
Political, Social, and ecomic response to industrialization and technological innovation:
Objective: The students identify means of transportation that are used today to travel from place to place such as airplanes, boats, trains, busses, automobiles, and bicycles. Identify methods of travel in the past.
Cultural and social development: standard 372.01.g and h
Objective: The students describe how people in communities help each other and how all families have similarities and differences.
Foundations of the American Political System: standard 373.01.a
Objective: The students will listen to stories that reflect the cultural heritage of the United States - past, present, real, and fiction.
Citizen responsibilities and rights: standard 375.01.b and d
Objective: The students demonstrate ways to be helpful to and identify leadership roles in the school, neighborhood, community, and family.
Geography: standard 378.01.e
Objective: The students will be able to use a map of familiar areas.

Teacher: Introduce the post office to the students. Using teacher made coloring sheets, the teacher will talk about the post office. The teacher will determine prior knowledge of the post office.
Students: The students will color the postman coloring sheet.
Teacher: Review what the post office does for the community. Orally read and discuss the book Mailing May. As we read the story, the teacher will has questions “why, how, and what-if”. Use the kit “My Community” to discuss the U. S. Mail then and now (p. 24). http://www.usps.com/cpim/ftp/pubs/pub100.pdf Use this web site to compare the postal service then and now as well as postal transportation then and now.
Teacher: Review the story Mailing May and the purpose of the post office. Set up play post office. Demonstrate the process of sending a letter today.
Students: Copy a sentence from the board to their parent(s).
Teacher: Review the Postal services.
Students: Divide into three groups: group one will address an envelope, group two will create maps to the post office (gifted – map from Grangeville to Lewiston) and group three will create a design a stamp.
The students will take a tour of the post office and mail the letter to their parent(s). The students will present their stamp designs to the post master.
