Introduce the book, Mailing May, to the students.

  1. Fold three paper bags in half and stack on top of each other, aligning along the folds.  Hole punch and tie bags together with string.  You now have a great booklet, some pages have pockets, some do not.

Conclusion

The purpose of this unit is to give students an idea of what a literature-based unit looks like.  They will work on cross-curricular, grade-appropriate lessons.  I also want them to realize that our area is "rich" in Idaho History and make geographic connections with the literature.  My hope is that they will have something to share from the unit the next time that they pass a train trestle.

Teacher Information

Grade Level(s): 3rd-4th Grade

Subject(s):Cross-Curriculum

Length of project:Weeklong Unit

Teaching models used:Inquire/Discovery Model

Extensions to additional grades and subjects:  This is a great piece of literature and additional lessons could easily be added.  I thought that a great project for older students would be to utilize their math/science/technology and create a model of a trestle bridge.

Prior knowledge/critical skills needed (either for students or teachers):  Teachers will have to be "tech" savvy and know the ins/outs of the digital camera.  Both teacher and student will need to be familiar with Print Shop.

Learning Outcomes/Curriculum Standards:

  • Students will learn that literate-based lessons will offer multiple learning opportunities.

  • Students will need to practice cooperative learning and creative problem-solving.

  • Standards have all on each individual lesson.  Here's a link to the Idaho State Board of Education website for standards.
