Language Arts based lesson using the book Mailing May
Objective: The student will create a postcard that could have been sent from May to her parents after she arrived at her Grandmothers house.

708.01 – Understand and use the writing process
Materials:
Postcard - 3X5 piece of construction paper (teacher provided)
Art materials (colored pencils, markers, etc…)

Process: Read and discuss the book, Mailing May, the student will create his or her own postcard. An address for May’s parents will be provided, but the students will need to use the address in the book for May’s grandmother as the return address. The student will need to write as May, writing to her family back home while visiting her grandmother in Lewiston. I will provide examples of sent postcards and the student will be given a blank postcard. The student will also decorate a scene for the front of the postcard that May could have seen from the train door.
Assessment: The postcard will be needed to complete a page in the “bag” book.
