Fenn Ranger Station

Fenn Ranger Station is named after Major Frank Fenn. Frank Fenn is considered to be the one responsible for establishing the Forest Service in the Clearwater country. Major Fenn attended the U.S. Naval academy in 1869. He was appointed a first lieutenant in the Idaho Militia when war broke out with the Nez Perce and Fenn participated in several battles in White Bird Canyon. During the Spanish American War Fenn volunteered for service and was promoted to the rank of Captain. He traveled to the Philippine Islands with his military unit. In September of 1899 he left the army with the rank of Major and returned to Boise, Idaho. He was appointed chief clerk of the State Land Board in 1891 and in 1901 he was appointed superintendent of all forest reserves in Idaho. He then relocated to the Kooskia area. The forest reserves were reorganized in 1904 and Fenn became a superviser. Four years later Fenn became the first supervisor of the Clearwater National Forest. When the Selway National Forest was split away from the Clearwater National Forest in 1911 he remained in Kooskia as supervisor of the Selway district. In 1914 he was named chief of lands in the district office at Missoula, Montana. Fenn Mountain and Major Fenn picnic area are also named in his honor. The historic Fenn Ranger station is located on the Selway River approximately 5 miles from the confluence of the Selway and the Lochsa Rivers. These two rivers come together to form the Middle Fork of the Clearwater River in northcentral Idaho. Today the Fenn Ranger Station remains a functioning ranger station.
