St Gertrude's Museum and Monastery

St Gertrude's Monastery is located three miles southwest of the town of Cottonwood, Idaho. It was founded in 1909 by Benedictine Nuns who traveled to the United States from Sarnen, Switzerland. Basalt quarried form the sister's land was used to build the impressive stone chapel and residence. Construction began in 1920. The small wooden chapel seen in the photo above, sits up the hill from the chapel. Visitors can walk the path to the tiny chapel. Along the way they may stop at the 14 small enclosed statues depicting the Stations of the Cross. Follow this link for more information about St. Gertrude's Monastery and Museum
