Shannon Engledow Kamiah Elementary Fall 2005 Iteach Project Subject Area: Language Arts Grade Level: K-3 **(Could be a K-12 with adaptations) Standards Addressed: 680.01.x680.03.b Sequencing 680.03.d Cause and Effect Lesson objectives: The students will be able to retell a legend that includes the three basic story components: Beginning, middle and end. The students will be able to discuss the cause and effect of a legend and its story elements. Lesson background: Students must have the background knowledge of legends and the significance legends held in historical recollection. Students also need to have the prior knowledge of the three main parts of a story. Materials: 1 paper bag or bucket copies of various animals/reptiles Procedure: 1. Teacher will ask students to draw an animal from the bag. 2. As a part of the weekly homework, students and parents will create a legend about his/her animal and how that animal came to be. Each story must include the three basic story elements when retold. 3. The students will have a week to prepare and presentations will be in two sessions. Evaluation/Assessment: Parents will be given the grading information as follows with the homework assignment. Scoring Rubric 3 2 1 Student *included all three literary elements. Student *included one literary element. Part II: After all of the presentations have been completed discuss as a class the cause/effects of the stories that were presented. Materials: Overhead projector Cause/Effect Map on overhead film Overhead markers Procedure: Model the cause and effect map out loud using familiar legend that was discussed in class over the unit.
